TRAINING

Training of our foals starts from the first day of their lives.
Although they are born outside, they are close to the house and have a " private room " , a 30' X 60' corral with their dams. This way we can handle them many times a day without interference from other horses.
They can see other horses close by but not so close that their dams get excited.
The foal in this picture is about 3 weeks old and leads from both sides, backs up and lifts all of its feet willingly. By this time Brenda can lead both horses without any help. It pays to have a good relationship with the dam long before the foal is born.

In 2005 and 2006 we had the pleasure of hiring Rick Bates of Bragg Creek, AB to come to our place to start some of our young Tennessee Walking Horses. Rick likes the sunshine so he didn't mind riding outside in the late summer and early fall. While he was here he even managed
to add to his collection of campfire stories and cowboy poems! |
In September of 2008 Rick came to spend another
month with our young horses. We had beautiful weather and the horses had a fine time learning to become useful! Thank you once again, Rick. We've certainly enjoyed having you here again!
To see some of the gentle handling our horses get while Rick is starting them under saddle, go to the Movies page to view the numbered movies.
